I looked back at the last six NCAA team champions - Penn State in '14 and '16-19, and Ohio State in '15 - to see how their guys placed in claiming their championships. Here's how it shook out:

1st place - anywhere from 2 to 6 per championship team... 3.5 is about average
2nd place - anywhere from 0 to 3 per championship team... 1.5 is about average
3rd place - anywhere from 0 to 1 per championship team... 0 is about average
4th place - none of the past six champions has had a 4th place finisher... 0 is the average
5th place - anywhere from 0 to 2 per championship team... 1 is the average
6th place - anywhere from 0 to 1 per championship team... 0 is about average
7th place - anywhere from 0 to 2 per championship team... 1 is about average
8th place - anywhere from 0 to 1 per championship team... 0 is about average
No place - anywhere from 1 to 5 per championship team... 3 is about average

So to win a natty we are likely to need ~5 guys to make the finals and have ~3 win it. We'll also need a couple of other All-Americans. Certainly we can win it other ways, but that is on average what Penn State has been doing the last six years.

Can anybody project a lineup at some point over the next 3-4 years or so that could produce:

7 All-Americans
5 Finalists
3 Champs

- or at least something close to it?
